He was born into a well to do family. Following in his fathers footsteps he entered the army after graduating from the Indonesian Military Academy in 1973. He then was aranged to marry Kristiani Herawati, the daughter of a very powerful general. He then advanced and started to train with the us army, at the us training facilities.
